Turmeric, also known as Curcuma longa, is an herb related to ginger. The plant is grown throughout India and other tropical regions. It is known for its pepper-like aroma, sharp taste, and golden color.
In its powdered form, turmeric is a spice loaded with the health benefits of iron, magnesium, vitamin B6, dietary fiber, and potassium and used for generations not only in the kitchen but in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines to treat a variety of ailments as early as the seventh century A.D.
